Few American clubs carry as much weight in the game's history as Shinnecock Hills. Founded in 1891, it is one of the five founding members of the United States Golf Association and among the oldest golf clubs in the country. The current course — shaped largely by William Flynn in 1931, with subsequent work by various architects over the decades — occupies a stretch of genuine linksland on eastern Long Island, a rarity on this side of the Atlantic. The sandy soil, exposed terrain, and relentless wind off Peconic Bay create conditions that can make par 70 feel like an act of mercy or an impossible target depending on the day.
Shinnecock has hosted the U.S. Open 5 times, most recently in 2018, and each visit has produced some of the championship's most dramatic and debated moments. The course's routing across rolling, fescue-covered hills rewards imagination and punishes complacency, with no two holes feeling alike.
Southampton sits at the eastern end of Long Island's South Fork, surrounded by the Hamptons' mix of old money, open farmland, and Atlantic coastline — a setting that gives Shinnecock Hills a sense of place that feels genuinely earned rather than manufactured.
