Packanack Golf Club takes its name from Packanack Lake, the private residential community in Wayne that surrounds it — a mid-20th-century development in Passaic County where the golf course has long served as the social and recreational heart of the neighborhood. That kind of tight bond between course and community gives Packanack a members'-club feel that's genuinely earned rather than merely marketed: the people playing here largely live within walking distance, and it shows in the atmosphere.
Wayne sits in the Passaic River valley at the foot of the Watchung and Ramapo foothills, and northern New Jersey's mix of mature hardwoods, glacially shaped terrain, and distinct seasons gives courses in this corridor real visual texture. Autumn, in particular, tends to be spectacular throughout Passaic County, and a layout winding through an established lakeside community will collect that color in abundance.
For golfers new to the area, Packanack offers a window into a slice of Jersey suburban golf culture that predates the resort era — straightforward, unpretentious, and rooted in the rhythms of a tight-knit neighborhood.
