Pine Lakes Country Club holds a genuinely singular place in American golf history — this is the "Granddaddy," the oldest golf course in Myrtle Beach, opened in 1927. Designed by Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America, it predates the resort boom that would eventually make the Grand Strand one of the most golf-saturated destinations on the planet. The course also lays claim to an unlikely piece of sports media history: Sports Illustrated magazine was reportedly conceived at Pine Lakes in 1954, when a group of publishing executives gathered here and sketched out the idea over drinks.
The layout plays as a par 70, which tends to reward shot-making and precision over raw power — a character well suited to a course that has been welcoming golfers for nearly a century. The design reflects an earlier era of golf architecture, when courses were built to work with the land rather than overwhelm it.
Myrtle Beach now hosts well over 100 courses along its coastline, but Pine Lakes remains something different: a place with genuine provenance in a market built almost entirely on novelty. Playing here carries the quiet weight of history that most courses along the Grand Strand simply cannot offer.
