Few courses in American golf carry the weight of history — and controversy — that Shoal Creek does. Jack Nicklaus designed the layout, which opened in 1977 on the wooded, rolling terrain south of Birmingham, and it quickly earned a reputation as one of the most demanding private members' clubs in the Southeast. The PGA Championship came here in 1984 and again in 1990, but it was the latter visit that proved watershed for the sport: founder Hall Thompson's comments about the club's all-white membership ignited a national conversation about exclusion in golf, ultimately pushing the PGA of America and other major bodies to adopt nondiscrimination policies. The 1990 championship itself was won by Wayne Grady, and a young Robert Gamez and a 14-year-old Phil Mickelson played in the amateur field that week.
The course itself is a Nicklaus design in the classic mold — strategic, demanding, and built to reward precision over raw power. The Alabama hardwood forest that frames nearly every hole gives the property an imposing, cathedral-like character that belies its suburban setting.
Shoal Creek remains one of the more significant addresses in American golf, a place where the game's competitive and social history intersect in ways no scorecard can begin to capture.
