Manorville sits near the eastern edge of Long Island's Pine Barrens, a sprawling tract of scrub oak and pitch pine that gives this part of Suffolk County a character quite different from the Hamptons golf scene just a short drive further east. The sandy, fast-draining soils here are genuinely good ground for golf — the same kind of terrain that made Pine Valley and Pinehurst famous — and Pine Hills Country Club sits squarely within that landscape.
As a private country club, Pine Hills offers members the unhurried rhythms of a familiar, community-rooted game — a place where regulars know the quirks of every bounce and the superintendent's work through the seasons. The par-73 layout is a detail worth noting: that extra stroke beyond the standard par-72 signals a longer par-5 or an additional par-3 somewhere in the routing, giving the course its own arithmetic personality.
Long Island's golf culture runs deep, and the Pine Barrens region in particular rewards courses that work with the land rather than against it. Whether Pine Hills does that well is something a round will tell you better than a scorecard.
