Cantabria's interior doesn't get the attention of its dramatic coastline, but the comarca of Campoo de Enmedio offers a strikingly different side of northern Spain — high green valleys carved by the Ebro headwaters, the Embalse del Ebro reservoir spreading wide across the plateau, and the Cantabrian mountains rising sharply to the south. Reinosa, the main town nearby, sits at over 850 metres elevation, which gives the region a climate genuinely unlike the mild Cantabrian coast: cooler summers, proper winters, and a landscape that feels more Castilian than Atlantic.
The golf course at Nestares sits within this upland setting, a layout that clearly belongs to its surroundings rather than a manicured resort bubble. Courses in this part of Spain tend to be community-minded, low-key affairs where local members and visitors coexist without ceremony, and the emphasis falls on the pleasure of playing in an exceptional natural environment.
For visiting golfers, the appeal is the combination of mountain scenery and genuine quietude — rounds here tend to be unhurried, and the backdrop of the Picos de Europa foothills makes even ordinary holes feel worth the detour.
