Slick Rock is the original course at Horseshoe Bay Resort, the sprawling Hill Country destination on the shores of Lake LBJ that helped put this stretch of central Texas on the golf map. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1972, it was the first of 3 courses Jones would build at the resort, and it remains the layout most associated with the property's identity. The course takes its name from a natural rock-bottom creek that winds through the property and comes into play on multiple holes — water hazards here are literal features of the landscape, not artificial additions.
The Texas Hill Country sets a distinctive stage: thin limestone soils, native live oaks, rugged terrain, and a semi-arid climate that keeps conditions firm and fast for much of the year. Horseshoe Bay sits about 50 miles northwest of Austin, drawing a mix of resort guests and serious golfers who make the trip specifically for the Jones trilogy.
Slick Rock plays as a traditional parkland-meets-Hill Country layout — strategic bunkering, the persistent creek, and elevation changes that Jones used to frame decisions throughout the round rather than overwhelm with raw length.
