Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Course

Pete Dye designed Carmel Valley Ranch's golf course, which opened in 1981 as part of the resort property tucked into the Santa Lucia foothills east of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Dye's fingerprints are unmistakable throughout — the railroad ties, the forced carries, the deceptive greens — but the course earns its reputation not from trickery alone. The terrain is genuinely dramatic, with elevation changes that swing views between the valley floor and the coastal range, and the native oak woodland that frames nearly every hole gives the layout a wild, untamed character that feels distinct from the manicured resort golf found elsewhere on the Monterey Peninsula.
