Few golf settings in California carry the elevation and drama of the Sierra Nevada, and Northstar at Tahoe puts you squarely in the middle of it. The course sits within the broader Northstar resort complex outside Truckee — a four-season mountain destination better known in winter for its ski terrain but increasingly respected for what it offers golfers when the snow clears. At roughly 6,300 feet above sea level, the thin air adds genuine distance to your shots, which makes the mountain terrain and tree-lined corridors feel like a fair trade.
Truckee itself is a legitimate mountain town with a working railroad history and a tight-knit year-round community, sitting just north of Lake Tahoe along I-80. The golf window runs summer through early fall, when the Sierras are at their most spectacular — open skies, cool mornings, and the kind of afternoon light that makes pine-framed fairways look almost unreasonably good.
Resort mountain golf tends to reward patience over power, and playing within the constraints of a wooded layout at altitude is its own education. Northstar delivers the full high-country package: scenery that competes with the golf for your attention, and conditions that change quickly enough to keep you honest.
