Few private clubs in the Chicago suburbs carry the kind of architectural pedigree Merit Club does. The course was designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1994, part of a wave of high-end private developments that sought to bring genuine destination-quality golf to the Chicagoland market. Fazio's routing takes full advantage of the rolling terrain of Lake County's moraine landscape, moving through mature hardwoods and open meadows in a way that feels more naturalistic than manicured — a deliberate counterpoint to the more manufactured parkland layouts common in the region.
Merit Club has consistently ranked among the strongest private courses in Illinois, drawing comparisons to Fazio's most celebrated work elsewhere in the country. The design rewards thoughtful play over power, with fairways that angle away from the obvious line and greens complexes that demand precise approach decisions. It is the kind of course where the second and third rounds reveal things the first one does not.
Libertyville sits in the northern suburban corridor about 35 miles from downtown Chicago, in a part of Lake County known for its wooded residential character and proximity to the Chain O'Lakes region.
