Cherry Point sits on the southern shore of the Neuse River in Craven County, a stretch of coastal North Carolina where longleaf pines, flatwater estuaries, and the constant presence of military aviation define the landscape. The course takes its name from the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, one of the largest MCAS installations in the country — the roar of Harriers and F-35Bs overhead is part of the atmosphere here, not a distraction from it. Courses on active military bases carry a culture all their own: they exist to serve servicemembers and their families, and that mission shapes everything from the pace of play to the welcome you receive at the pro shop.
The terrain across this part of coastal Carolina tends toward the flat and open, with water hazards and tree lines doing most of the work that elevation would handle elsewhere. Wind off the Neuse River estuary can shift conditions considerably from front nine to back.
For civilians, access to military courses typically requires sponsorship by a servicemember or base authorization — worth sorting out in advance, because these installations often deliver solid, well-maintained golf at genuinely fair prices.
