Few Hudson Valley settings put a round of golf in such direct conversation with the land's agricultural past. Apple Greens occupies a former apple orchard in Highland, and the trees — many of them still producing — define the course's character in a way that no manufactured hazard ever could. Fairways weave between mature fruit trees that tighten angles, punish wayward drives, and shift with the seasons from bare winter silhouettes to full spring bloom to heavy-fruited canopies by late summer.
Highland sits on the west bank of the Hudson River, directly across from Poughkeepsie, in a part of New York that has grown apples commercially since the 17th century. The terrain here rolls with the gentle but honest topography typical of the mid-Hudson region, and the Catskills form a backdrop to the northwest that gives the whole property an unhurried, pastoral feel.
At par 70, the course plays shorter and more target-oriented than a traditional parkland layout, which suits the orchard setting well. This is a place where local knowledge — reading how a slope breaks near an old tree line — matters more than raw power.
