Wild Dunes Resort's Harbor Course sits on the northern end of Isle of Palms, a barrier island about 20 miles east of Charleston. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1980, it was his early signature work in the Lowcountry — a layout that winds through tidal marshes, maritime forest, and alongside the Intracoastal Waterway. The course has been partially reconfigured over the years after hurricane damage reshaped sections of the property, giving it an unusual layered history that devoted regulars tend to know well.
A par 70 demands precision over power, and Fazio used the natural landforms here to create a course that rewards course management rather than length. The marsh carries and tight corridors through live oaks and palmettos make club selection genuinely consequential, and the wind off the water shifts conditions from round to round in ways a scorecard could never predict.
Isle of Palms itself is a relaxed, unpretentious beach community, and that atmosphere carries onto the course. Pelicans, herons, and dolphins spotted from the back nine are entirely normal here. For golfers traveling through coastal South Carolina, the Harbor Course offers something rarer than difficulty — it offers genuine sense of place.
