Golfclub Driene sits on the eastern edge of Hengelo, one of the industrial heartland cities of Overijssel, in a part of the Netherlands that most visiting golfers overlook entirely in favour of the coastal or Randstad clubs. That's largely their loss. The Twente region has a quiet, grounded character — flat to gently rolling, threaded with farmland and patches of deciduous woodland — and Driene reflects that landscape honestly rather than trying to dress it up.
The course occupies grounds that blend open fairways with tree-lined corridors, a layout style common to Dutch provincial clubs that developed through the latter half of the 20th century. Membership here has always been rooted in the local community rather than any aspirations toward prestige, and the atmosphere is accordingly relaxed and genuinely welcoming to visiting players.
Hengelo itself borders Enschede, home to the University of Twente, which gives the wider area a younger, more international edge than its industrial history might suggest. The golf scene in Twente is modest but loyal, and Driene sits comfortably at the centre of it.
