Few private clubs in New England carry the historical weight that Kernwood does. The course dates to 1914 and was designed by Donald Ross, the Scottish-born architect whose fingerprints are on some of the most celebrated layouts in American golf. Ross's work here reflects his characteristic philosophy: modest length demanding precise ball-striking, greens that tilt and shed toward the edges, and a routing that rewards course management over brute force. Par 70 suits the design perfectly — this was never meant to be a bomber's track.
Salem itself is one of Massachusetts' most storied cities, better known to the world for its 17th-century witch trials than for its golf, but the North Shore landscape gives Kernwood genuine charm.
