Few corners of Ohio carry as much quiet distinctiveness as Sugarcreek, a small town at the heart of the state's Amish Country — a landscape of rolling farmland, weathered barns, and unhurried pace that sits about an hour south of Canton and just east of Wooster. Black Gold Golf Club takes its name from the region's petroleum history; oil was discovered in this part of Tuscarawas County in the late 19th century, and that heritage runs through the club's identity in a way that sets it apart from the generic countryside course.
The terrain here does most of the heavy lifting. Holmes and Tuscarawas counties are defined by the same glacially sculpted hills that give northeastern Ohio its gentle but persistent topography — tight valleys, wooded ridgelines, and turf that holds up well through the region's four distinct seasons. That kind of ground tends to produce a walking course with real variety and natural separation between holes.
Sugarcreek's Amish community means the surrounding landscape remains genuinely agricultural and largely undeveloped, which gives rounds here a sense of remove that bigger-market courses spend fortunes trying to manufacture. This is everyday golf in a place that actually looks like somewhere.
