Virginia Beach might be synonymous with oceanfront resorts and summer tourism, but Stumpy Lake sits well inland from the resort strip, occupying a quieter, woodsier corner of the city where the landscape shifts toward the flat, forested wetlands characteristic of coastal Virginia's interior. The course wraps around and alongside Stumpy Lake itself, and water — whether the lake proper, marshland, or interconnecting ponds — defines the round in a way no yardage number can fully convey. This is a layout where course management and ball-striking accuracy matter considerably more than raw distance.
As a municipally operated facility, Stumpy Lake has long served as an accessible entry point for Virginia Beach's broad golfing community, from beginners finding their footing to regulars who know every bounce and breeze. The natural setting does a lot of the heavy lifting — towering pines, cypress, and native vegetation frame most holes, giving the course a wilder, more remote feel than you'd expect from a city-owned property.
