Portaferry sits at the very tip of the Ards Peninsula, where the narrow mouth of Strangford Lough meets the open waters of the Irish Sea. It's one of those small County Down towns that feels genuinely remote — reached by a short ferry crossing from Strangford or a long drive down the peninsula's spine — and the landscape around it is unmistakably coastal: low-lying, wind-scoured, and threaded with tidal channels and drumlins.
