Few clubs in New England carry the architectural prestige of Wannamoisett. Donald Ross designed the course in 1914, and it stands today as one of his most celebrated works — a compact, fiendishly strategic layout that proves length was never Ross's primary weapon. The par 69 reflects the course's philosophy: Ross trusted crowned greens, precise angles, and relentless short-game demands over brute yardage. Wannamoisett has earned consistent placement among the top-ranked courses in the United States, a remarkable distinction for a layout that fits onto a relatively modest footprint in suburban Rhode Island.
The course has hosted significant amateur competition over the decades, and its membership has long regarded it as a thinking golfer's test. Every club in the bag earns its keep here, and the greens — fast, contoured, and unforgiving of anything but the right approach angle — are the course's signature.
Rumford sits just outside Providence, giving Wannamoisett an almost urban setting that makes its quiet, tree-lined intimacy all the more striking. This is old-money New England golf at its most refined.
