Few public courses anywhere in the Pacific Northwest have earned the kind of immediate national attention Wine Valley did upon opening in 2009. Designed by Dan Hixson, the layout quickly climbed into the conversation among the best public courses in the country — Golf Digest and other major outlets took notice almost immediately, and it has held a strong ranking position ever since. Hixson sculpted the terrain with a minimalist hand, letting the natural contours of the rolling wheat-field hills do much of the work. The result is a course that feels both timeless and entirely of its place: wide, tumbling fairways, bold green complexes, and exposed ridgelines that reward strategic thinking over brute force.
Walla Walla sits in the far southeastern corner of Washington, where the Blue Mountains rise to the east and the high desert gives way to some of the most celebrated wine country in America. The same volcanic soils and dramatic elevation changes that produce world-class Syrah and Cabernet define the ground underfoot here.
For visiting golfers, Wine Valley is often the anchor of a weekend that pairs serious rounds with serious bottles. The course plays firm and fast, and its scale rewards a proper walk. It is the rare public layout that genuinely competes with the best the region — or the country — has to offer.
