Orange sits at the far eastern edge of Texas, pressed against the Louisiana border where the Sabine River marks the state line. The landscape here is Gulf Coast lowland — flat, humid, and thick with pine and hardwood, more bayou country than the arid Texas most outsiders imagine. Golf in this corner of the state carries a distinctly Southern feel, shaped by the same moss-draped, river-bottom terrain that defines golf throughout western Louisiana and coastal East Texas.
Sunset Grove Country Club has the name and feel of a classic mid-century private club — the kind of members' course built around community, regulars who know every bounce and break, and a layout that rewards local knowledge over raw power. A par 71 suggests at least one unconventional twist in the card, whether an asymmetric mix of par 3s and 5s or a shortish closing stretch that puts a premium on precision.
For a visitor, Orange itself is an unpretentious industrial river town with a genuine golf culture rooted in everyday play rather than resort fanfare — honest, unhurried, and worth a round if you're passing through on I-10.
