Few courses along the South Carolina Grand Strand have earned the kind of devoted following that Caledonia Golf & Fish Club commands. Designed by Mike Strantz and opened in 1994, it is widely regarded as one of his finest works — a dramatic, visually arresting layout built on the grounds of a former rice plantation. The antebellum clubhouse, ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and tidal marshes create an atmosphere that feels genuinely unlike anywhere else in American resort golf. Golf Digest and other major publications have ranked it among the best courses in the state and the country, and it regularly tops "must-play" lists for the Myrtle Beach area.
Strantz routed the course with a painter's eye, framing nearly every hole with water, marsh, or centuries-old trees. The closing stretch is particularly memorable, with risk-reward decisions that reward bold play but punish miscalculation.
Pawleys Island itself has a quietly unhurried character — the self-proclaimed "arrogantly shabby" beach community sits just south of the Myrtle Beach resort corridor, grounding Caledonia in something that feels more timeless than touristy.
