Hillcrest Country Club has been a cornerstone of Lubbock's private golf community for decades, occupying a spot in a city that takes its golf seriously despite — or perhaps because of — the demands the South Plains impose on the game. Wind is the ever-present variable out here on the high desert plateau of West Texas, where it arrives without warning and can turn a manageable par 4 into something requiring a completely different club selection and a recalibrated ego. Learning to play Hillcrest means learning to play in conditions that rarely let you settle into a rhythm.
The course sits in a part of Texas where the terrain is flat and the sky dominates everything, which places a premium on strategic design rather than dramatic elevation change. Mature trees define the corridors and provide the visual character that the land itself doesn't naturally offer.
As a private club, Hillcrest functions as a genuine gathering place for Lubbock's golf community — the kind of course members play hundreds of times and still find ways to score poorly when the wind decides to have its say.
