Few golf clubs in Canada carry the institutional weight of Royal Colwood. Founded in 1913 and granted its royal designation by King George V, the club sits in the Colwood municipality just west of Victoria and stands among the oldest and most storied private clubs on the Pacific coast. A.V. Macan, the Irish-born architect who shaped much of early West Coast golf, designed the layout — his work here remains a textbook example of how to coax a thoughtful, strategic course from rolling, tree-lined terrain without resorting to artifice.
The course plays to a par of 70, which hints at its character: this is a thinking person's golf course, one that rewards placement and shot-making over raw power. Macan's routing asks players to work the ball both ways, and the mature fir and Garry oak canopy frames almost every hole with the kind of unhurried beauty that defines golf on southern Vancouver Island.
Victoria itself enjoys the mildest climate in Canada, meaning Royal Colwood sees year-round play rare elsewhere in the country. The city's relaxed, slightly old-world atmosphere suits the club perfectly — this is a place where the game is taken seriously but never joylessly.
