Few courses in England sit quite as exposed as Hayling Golf Club, occupying the western tip of Hayling Island on the Hampshire coast. The course is a genuine links, shaped by the same tidal forces and salt-laden winds that define the shoreline — an increasingly rare thing in southern England. Tom Dunn laid out the original course in the late 19th century, and the great J.H. Taylor, 5-time Open Champion, later revised it into something more demanding and true to links tradition. The result is a course that rewards low running shots, creative thinking around the greens, and a willingness to accept what the wind gives you on any given day.
Hayling Island itself sits between Chichester Harbour and Langstone Harbour, a landscape of tidal mudflats, salt marsh, and open sky. The golf course occupies the exposed western end, meaning the sea is a near-constant presence — visible, audible, and very much a factor in club selection.
Hayling has long been admired by links purists as one of the south of England's most authentic experiences. It lacks the fame of its northern counterparts, but those who know it tend to hold it in genuine affection — a course that requires real golf rather than simply rewarding power.
