Playa Grande Golf

Playa Grande Golf sits on one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in the Caribbean, where the Atlantic Ocean hammers against the rugged northern shore of the Dominican Republic. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1997, widely considered among his finest late-career work — high praise given a portfolio that spans hundreds of courses across 6 continents. Jones routed the layout along a series of clifftop headlands and coves, with several holes playing directly above the ocean on terrain that has no real equivalent in Caribbean golf. The property had been earmarked for a major resort development that never fully materialized, which left the course in a kind of magnificent isolation for years.

The holes along the ocean — particularly those on the back nine where the cliffs drop sharply to the Atlantic — are as visually arresting as any in the region. Wind off the water is the great variable here, turning manageable approaches into genuine tests of nerve and shot-shaping.

Río San Juan is a small fishing town, unhurried and largely untouched by mass tourism, which gives a round at Playa Grande a quality hard to find elsewhere in the Dominican Republic. This is not a resort golf experience in any conventional sense — it is something rarer.
