Few golf settings anywhere in the world match the sheer improbability of Nuwara Eliya Golf Club. Sitting at roughly 1,868 metres above sea level in Sri Lanka's central highlands, the course occupies a plateau carved from colonial-era hill-station country — the kind of landscape the British built to remind themselves of home. The surrounding Nuwara Eliya town still carries that faded-empire atmosphere: Victorian-era bungalows, a racecourse next door, tea estates climbing the hillsides in every direction. The air here is genuinely cool and thin, a startling contrast to the tropical heat most visitors associate with Sri Lanka.
The club itself is one of Asia's oldest, tracing its roots to the late 19th century, and that heritage runs through everything — the clubhouse, the rhythms of the place, the sense that golf has been played on this ground across several distinct eras of history. The layout works with a compact, undulating terrain, and the par of 69 tells you the course rewards precision and placement over raw power.
