Few public golf facilities in the Finger Lakes region have built the kind of loyal local following that Victor Hills has over the decades. The South Course is the longer and more demanding of the two 18-hole layouts on the property, drawing players from Rochester and the surrounding suburbs who want a genuine test without the trappings of a private club. It sits in Ontario County, in the rolling drumlin terrain that defines this part of upstate New York — land shaped by glaciers, giving the ground a natural rhythm of rises and falloffs that a flat-state golfer would find immediately distinctive.
Victor itself sits at a comfortable remove from Rochester's sprawl, close enough to draw the metro's sizable golfing population but with the feel of small-town western New York. Spring comes a little late here, and the season runs earnest from May through October, with fall rounds often rewarded by the kind of cool, crisp air that keeps the ball in the fairway and the colors on the hillsides vivid.
As a public facility with 36 holes on site, Victor Hills carries the democratic spirit that defines the best everyday golf in America — no tee times months in advance, no membership required, just a course that the community has worn in comfortably over time.
