Weitnau sits in the Allgäu, the rolling, cow-dotted corner of Bavaria where the foothills of the Alps begin to assert themselves before the high peaks take over toward Oberstdorf and the Austrian border. It is dairy country and hiking country, the kind of landscape where the air carries a permanent freshness and the views shift constantly with the hills. Golf courses in this part of southern Germany tend to read as natural extensions of their surroundings rather than impositions on them, and Golfclub Hellengerst is very much in that tradition.
The course occupies terrain that is genuinely hilly — the Allgäu does not offer flat land easily — which means elevation changes are a constant factor in club selection and course management. Fairways move through open meadowland and wooded sections, framed by the kind of agricultural landscape that makes the region so visually distinctive. On clear days the Alpine panorama to the south adds a backdrop that few courses anywhere can match.
This is a members' club serving the local community and the steady stream of visitors who discover the Allgäu as a year-round destination. The region's short but lush playing season, typically April through October, concentrates the activity and gives rounds here a seasonal quality that resort golf elsewhere rarely delivers.
