Benson sits in the high desert of Cochise County, roughly midway between Tucson and the New Mexico border, where the San Pedro River Valley cuts through grassland and scrubland at around 3,600 feet of elevation. That altitude keeps summers more forgiving than the scorched low desert, and the natural landscape — open skies, sparse desert vegetation, distant mountain ranges in every direction — gives any round here a distinctly wide-open, southwestern character.
The San Pedro Golf Course takes its name from the river that defines this stretch of southeastern Arizona, a rare perennial waterway that draws migrating birds and supports a corridor of cottonwoods and willows. Playing a public course named for such a landmark suggests a layout rooted in the local community rather than resort ambition — the kind of place where regulars know each other and the game moves at an easy pace.
Cochise County has a rugged, unhurried personality that tends to carry over onto its golf courses. At this elevation and in this terrain, expect firm turf, generous carry distances in the thin air, and surroundings that remind you exactly where you are.
