Washington's golf history runs deep, and East Potomac Park — home to the Blue Course — sits at the center of it. Operated by the National Park Service and managed by the Trust for the National Mall, this public facility occupies a narrow peninsula formed by the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, placing golfers in one of the most unusual settings in American golf: a working public layout within sight of federal monuments. The course dates to the early 20th century, making it one of the oldest continuously operating public golf facilities in the country.
The Blue Course is the longer of the layouts at East Potomac, playing across flat, open ground typical of the reclaimed parkland. Mature trees line many fairways, and the river is a constant presence — visually if not always in play. Wind off the water can quietly inflate a scorecard, particularly on exposed stretches where the land offers little shelter.
For residents of the District and visiting golfers alike, East Potomac represents something increasingly rare: genuine public golf on historically significant urban ground, accessible without a membership or a reservation made weeks in advance.
