Few stretches of linksland in Scotland carry quite the weight of Gullane Hill. The No.1 course — the longest and most demanding of Gullane Golf Club's 3 layouts — climbs to the top of that hill early in the round, rewarding players with one of the most sweeping views in British golf: the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh's skyline, the Isle of May, and on clear days, the hills of Fife spread out beyond. The descent back into the course is just as memorable as any hole on the card.
East Lothian is Scotland's most celebrated strip of links territory, running from Musselburgh out toward Muirfield and North Berwick, and Gullane sits comfortably among its finest. No.1 has served as a Final Qualifying venue for The Open Championship at nearby Muirfield, which speaks to its caliber. The turf is firm and fast, the rough authentic, and the wind off the Forth a constant and unpredictable factor.
This is a members' club with genuine history — Gullane GC dates to 1882 — and the No.1 course reflects that heritage. It rewards local knowledge, punishes wayward ball-striking, and offers the kind of unhurried, purposeful links experience that East Lothian has always done better than almost anywhere.
