George Cobb designed Hound Ears Club in 1963, carving a private mountain layout through the Blue Ridge terrain near Blowing Rock that remains one of the more distinctive resort-affiliated courses in the North Carolina High Country. Cobb, the prolific Carolinas architect best known for Augusta National's Par 3 Course, brought his characteristic sensitivity to natural landforms here — the routing works with the mountain topography rather than fighting it, producing holes that tumble through wooded hollows and open onto views of Grandfather Mountain and the surrounding ridgeline.
Blowing Rock sits at roughly 4,000 feet elevation, which means the air is thin enough to add real distance to your drives, the summers are genuinely cool, and the fall color arrives earlier and more dramatically than most anywhere in the Southeast. The course plays through a landscape of hardwoods, rock outcroppings, and mountain streams that give it a character no flatter terrain could replicate.
Hound Ears operates as a private club tied to a lodge and residential community, so access is limited — but for guests who can get on, it offers a mountain golf experience that feels rooted in a specific place and a specific moment in American resort design.
