Few American resort destinations carry the weight of Pinehurst. The village in the North Carolina Sandhills was conceived in the 1890s as a health retreat, became a golfer's obsession, and has grown into one of the sport's most storied addresses — home to multiple U.S. Opens, the Ryder Cup Matches, and more golf history per square mile than almost anywhere on the continent. Course No. 8 is the newest of the numbered layouts on the resort's roster, designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1996 to give the property a modern counterpart to Donald Ross's masterwork next door on No. 2.
Where Ross worked with subtlety and crowned greens, Fazio leaned into the drama the Sandhills landscape naturally offers — wire grass, longleaf pines, and exposed sandy waste areas framing holes that reward length and precision in roughly equal measure. No. 8 plays as a genuine championship test and hosted the 1999 and 2003 U.S. Amateur Public Links.
Staying at Pinehurst means access to one of the great collections of courses anywhere, and No. 8 holds its own in very demanding company.
