Few American clubs carry the weight of history that San Francisco Golf Club does. Founded in 1895, it ranks among the oldest golf clubs in the United States, and its current course — laid out by A.W. Tillinghast in 1915 — stands as one of his finest and least-heralded works. Tillinghast routed the layout across the undulating terrain of the Ingleside district, threading fairways through cypress and eucalyptus in a way that feels entirely of its place, shaped by the particular fog and wind patterns that roll in off the Pacific.

The course is famously private and fiercely so, which has kept it out of the public conversation despite consistently drawing respect from serious architects and historians. Tillinghast's bunkering is characteristically bold, and the ground game rewards players who think carefully — raw power has little place here.

San Francisco itself needs no golf pedigree to feel like a destination, but this club adds one all the same. It represents a strain of early American golf course design that is increasingly rare: restrained, strategic, and quietly brilliant.
