Few public golf experiences in the Orlando metro area match the ambition of Crooked Cat, one of 2 courses at Orange County National Golf Center & Lodge. Designed by Phil Ritson and Brick Andreson and opened in 1997, it was built on former cattle and citrus land west of Orlando — and that heritage shows in a layout that rolls across open, sun-baked terrain with wide corridors, aggressive bunkering, and water hazards that demand honest decisions off the tee. The course earned a reputation early on as one of Florida's better public-access tests, and Orange County National as a whole became a respected stop for serious amateurs and mini-tour players grinding through central Florida's competitive circuit.
Winter Garden sits at the western edge of the greater Orlando sprawl, where the urban density starts giving way to the old agricultural landscape of Lake County. The golf here feels more exposed and weathered than the manicured resort courses closer to the theme parks — afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast, and the Florida sun is unforgiving.
Crooked Cat rewards players who manage the tee shot first and worry about the flag second. Errant drives find sand or water quickly, and the greens reward patience over aggression. It plays as a genuine challenge for mid-handicappers while remaining accessible enough to draw a wide range of visitors passing through one of America's busiest golf destinations.
