Few courses in England carry the weight of history that Royal West Norfolk does. Founded in 1892 and set on the remote tidal flats of Brancaster on the north Norfolk coast, it is widely regarded as one of the finest and most atmospheric links in the British Isles — a course that demands you engage with the land on its own terms. The layout occupies a narrow strip of duneland bordered by saltmarsh and sea, and twice daily the tide reshapes your access to it, cutting the course off entirely when the water rises across the approach road. That elemental quality is inseparable from the experience.
The course itself is a pure, old-fashioned links, featuring plateau greens, deep sleeper-faced bunkers, and holes that run through natural corridors of marram grass with relatively few artificialities imposed upon them. The wind off the Wash governs everything.
Royal West Norfolk is a private members' club, and its unhurried, traditional atmosphere reflects that. It has no pretension toward modernity — and that is precisely its appeal. For golfers who care about links golf in its most original form, Brancaster is a genuine pilgrimage.
