Few public golf courses in upstate New York carry the history that Durand Eastman does. The course sits within Durand Eastman Park on Rochester's northeastern edge, a sprawling lakeside preserve donated to the city in the early 20th century by businessmen Henry Durand and George Eastman — yes, that George Eastman, the Kodak founder whose philanthropy shaped much of Rochester's civic identity. Playing here carries a quiet awareness of that legacy.
The terrain does most of the talking. The park rolls through forested glacial drumlins that tumble toward the southern shore of Lake Ontario, and the course moves with that landscape rather than against it — elevation changes, mature tree cover, and the occasional glimpse of open sky over the water give rounds here a sense of place that flatland municipal layouts simply can't manufacture. The par-70 configuration suggests a design that leans on its setting rather than raw length to create difficulty.
Rochester's public golf scene is earnest and unpretentious, and Durand Eastman fits comfortably in that tradition. This is a course for locals who know it well and visitors who stumble onto something better than they expected.
