Few golf courses in the American Southeast sit at the elevation Balsam Mountain Preserve commands. Perched high in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside Sylva, in the heart of Jackson County, this private club occupies land that feels genuinely remote — the kind of terrain where summer temperatures stay mild when the piedmont is sweltering and the autumn color show is among the most spectacular in the Southern Appalachians.
The course itself is a product of its setting in the most literal sense. Arnold Palmer's design team shaped the routing through an upscale residential preserve community, meaning the layout weaves through protected mountain forestland rather than manicured suburban sprawl. The par 70 configuration is not a concession to difficulty but a reflection of the land — shorter, strategic holes that reward placement over power, where the real challenge comes from elevation changes, mountain wind, and the mental demand of playing amid scenery that competes hard for your attention.
Sylva sits just outside Cullowhee and the broader Cherokee region, and the surrounding landscape gives Balsam Mountain Preserve a sense of place that purely destination courses rarely achieve. This is mountain golf as the mountains actually are.
