Zeewolde sits at the heart of Flevoland, the vast polder province that the Dutch reclaimed from the IJsselmeer across the mid-20th century — one of the largest land reclamation projects in human history. The landscape is unlike anywhere else in the Netherlands: ruler-flat, deliberately planted, and almost entirely man-made, with expansive forests of young pine and birch rising from soil that was still seabed within living memory. Harderwold Golf & Events is built into the Harderbos and Horsterwold forests on the southern edge of this new land, which means the course plays through a genuine woodland setting despite the trees being planted only a few decades ago.
The layout makes good use of the forest corridors and open heathland-style clearings that characterize this part of Flevoland, demanding accurate driving through tree-lined holes while offering some breathing room on more open stretches. The overall feel is quieter and more contemplative than courses closer to the Randstad cities.
As both a golf venue and an event facility, Harderwold caters to a broad audience — society days and corporate groups alongside regular club play — which gives it a welcoming, accessible atmosphere without pretension.
