Few private club developments in the American Southwest carry the prestige of Desert Mountain, the sprawling Scottsdale enclave that houses not 1 or 2 but 6 Jack Nicklaus Signature courses — each named for an Apache chief, each carved into the high Sonoran Desert north of the city. Geronimo is among the most celebrated of the six, and the Desert Mountain collection as a whole has earned a reputation as one of the most ambitious residential golf communities ever built, drawing serious players who want Nicklaus design variety within a single membership.
Playing Geronimo means navigating the rugged terrain of the McDowell Mountain foothills at elevations that leave the Phoenix basin visible far below. Nicklaus leaned into the natural contours here — arroyos, boulders, saguaro cactus, and dramatic grade changes shape the routing rather than fighting it, demanding precise shot-making and careful club selection at every turn.
Scottsdale's north corridor is rarefied golf territory, and Desert Mountain sits comfortably at its upper end. The dry desert air, reliably clear skies, and mountain panoramas make the physical experience of a round here as memorable as the design challenge itself.
