Few courses in England carry quite the mystique of Remedy Oak, a private members' club set within the ancient landscape of Cranborne Chase in Dorset — an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that has changed remarkably little since it served as a royal hunting ground in medieval times. The course occupies mature woodland and open heathland, a combination that gives it a dual personality: sheltered, tree-lined corridors giving way to exposed, windswept stretches where the sky opens up and the game changes entirely.
Designed by American architect David McLay Kidd — the man behind Bandon Dunes — and opened in 2007, Remedy Oak was built as a serious, uncompromising test of golf for its private membership. Its par of 73 is no accident; the course plays long and honest, rewarding patience and course management over aggression. The design draws on the natural contours of the Chase rather than imposing anything artificial on them.
Dorset is not traditionally regarded as prime English golf territory — that conversation usually begins in Surrey or Norfolk — but Remedy Oak has quietly earned a reputation as one of the finest inland layouts in the south of England.
