The Grove sits in Hertfordshire, north of London, on the grounds of a historic country estate that once served as a private retreat for the Clarendon family before becoming one of England's most celebrated resort and golf destinations. The course was designed by Kyle Phillips — the American architect behind Kingsbarns in Scotland — and opened in 2003. Phillips routed the layout across rolling parkland threaded with mature trees and a series of water features, producing a course that feels both classically English and distinctly modern in its ambition. It hosted the 2006 World Golf Championships–HSBC Champions event, bringing the world's best players to Hertfordshire and announcing The Grove as a serious championship venue.
Phillips's design rewards strategic thinking over raw power. The routing moves through varied terrain, with several holes demanding precise approaches over or around water, and the course can play firm and fast when conditions allow.
The broader estate — a luxury hotel and spa — means The Grove draws a mix of serious golfers and resort visitors, but the course holds up regardless of the occasion. For those traveling from London, it offers genuine championship-quality golf within easy reach of the city.
