Few courses in the Charleston area carry the historical weight that Dunes West does. The layout was designed by Arthur Hills and opened in 1991, built on land that was once part of Lexington Plantation — remnants of the antebellum estate, including an oak-lined entrance road, remain woven into the property. That combination of Low Country history and thoughtful golf architecture has made it one of the more distinctive venues in the Lowcountry.
Hills routed the course through a classic coastal Carolina landscape: tidal marshes, ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and the kind of elevation changes that surprise first-time visitors to the area. The result is a layout that demands strategic thinking rather than pure power, with water and wetlands in play on a significant number of holes. It has hosted various amateur and collegiate events over the years and holds strong regional rankings.
Mt. Pleasant itself sits just across the Ravenel Bridge from Charleston, giving Dunes West a convenient address without sacrificing the spacious, unhurried feel of a dedicated golf community.
