Tom Lehman and Tim Liddy designed Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation, which opened in 2000 on Charlotte's fast-growing eastern fringe in the Mint Hill area. Lehman, the 1996 British Open champion, brought a player's sensibility to the layout, and the result is a course that rewards thoughtful shot-making over raw power — generous enough off the tee in places, but with greens complexes and approach angles that demand real precision. The mature hardwood canopy, including the namesake sycamores, gives the course a sense of age and permanence that many of its suburban contemporaries simply don't have.
Mint Hill sits at the edge of the Piedmont, where the land rolls in a way that Charlotte's closer-in suburbs don't, and Olde Sycamore makes good use of those natural contours. The routing moves through stands of hardwoods with enough separation between holes that the outside world mostly disappears.
The course operates as a semi-private club, offering memberships while remaining open to public play — a format that keeps conditions competitive and the membership invested in the quality of the experience.
