美兰湖高尔夫俱乐部 sits in the Jiading district of northern Shanghai, part of the ambitious Meilan Lake development that transformed what was once farmland on the city's outskirts into one of China's most polished golf destinations. The club gained genuine international attention when it hosted the HSBC Champions — one of the European Tour's flagship events — in the mid-2000s, bringing the world's top-ranked players to Shanghai and establishing 美兰湖 as a serious tournament venue on the global circuit. The course was designed with that championship ambition in mind: broad, well-manicured fairways, significant water features threaded throughout the layout, and a finishing stretch that has produced real drama under tournament conditions.
Playing 美兰湖 today, the scale of the property stands out. The conditioning reflects the considerable investment that defined Chinese golf development in that era, and the club's facilities match the aspirational tone of the course itself.
Shanghai's golf scene is concentrated largely in the suburbs and satellite districts where land was available, and Jiading — also home to China's Formula 1 circuit — became one of those natural clusters. Summers are hot and humid, winters mild but grey, and the course plays best in the pleasant shoulder seasons of spring and autumn.
