Few settings in American golf match the sheer visual drama of Kauai, and Puakea makes the most of every acre. The course occupies land on the outskirts of Lihue — the island's commercial and civic hub on the southeastern shore — where the agricultural legacy of Hawaii's sugar industry still shapes the landscape. Puakea was developed on former plantation land, and that history gives the layout an unusually open, expansive quality punctuated by mature trees and the kind of rich red soil that signals you're somewhere genuinely different.
The design by Robin Nelson works with Kauai's dramatic backdrop rather than against it. The Haupu Ridge — sometimes called the "Jurassic Park mountains" — looms to the south, and on clear days the views are as distracting as any water hazard. The routing moves through varied terrain with enough elevation change to keep each nine feeling distinct.
For visitors to Kauai who want real golf rather than a resort sideshow, Puakea functions as the island's serious public-access option — well-maintained, locally embraced, and rooted in a place unlike anywhere else in the game.
