Few settings in American golf carry quite the historical weight of Jekyll Island. The barrier island off the Georgia coast — the state line notwithstanding, this is firmly Georgia — was once the private winter retreat of the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Morgans, members of the gilded-age Jekyll Island Club that controlled one of the most exclusive enclaves in the country. Golf arrived here in that same era, and the island's courses today carry the echoes of that remarkable past even as they serve a far more democratic public.
The Golf Club operates as a public facility within the Jekyll Island State Park, making it one of the more accessible stretches of coastal Georgia golf you'll find. The island's landscape does the heavy lifting — maritime forest, salt marsh views, Spanish moss draping the live oaks — and the terrain stays relatively flat in the way of barrier island golf everywhere along this stretch of the Atlantic coast.
For visitors, Jekyll Island tends to reward a slower pace. The island itself discourages overdevelopment by design, so the atmosphere around the course feels unhurried in a way that resort golf elsewhere rarely manages.
