Few courses in the Midwest carry the sense of purpose that The Harvester Golf Club does. Opened in 2000 and designed by Dick Phelps, this course in the small Marshall County community of Rhodes was built from the start as something more than a local layout — it quickly earned a reputation as one of Iowa's finest public courses, regularly appearing at or near the top of the state's best-of rankings. The design works with the rolling central Iowa terrain in a way that feels natural rather than imposed, with generous movement in the land, strategic bunkering, and a routing that rewards shot-shaping and course management over raw power.
Rhodes sits in the agricultural heart of Iowa, and the surrounding landscape of open farmland gives the course a wide-sky quality — long sightlines, exposed holes that demand you account for the wind, and a sense that you're playing in genuinely midwestern conditions rather than a manufactured retreat.
For a public facility of this caliber in a town of a few hundred people, The Harvester punches well above its weight. Golfers make the drive from Des Moines and beyond specifically to play it, which says everything about how well the course has held its reputation over 2 decades.
