Few American resort courses have arrived with as much fanfare as the Streamsong Red, which opened in 2012 alongside its sibling layout, the Blue, on a former phosphate mining site in central Florida's Polk County. The transformation of that scarred industrial land into one of the most celebrated golf destinations in the country is genuinely remarkable — the mining operations left behind dramatic contours, vast sandy waste areas, and ridgelines that bear almost no resemblance to the flat Florida terrain most golfers expect. Architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw seized on that raw material with characteristic restraint, letting the land dictate the routing and producing something that feels more like a Scottish links than a Sunshine State resort.
The Red plays firm and fast, rewarding creative shotmaking and ground-game thinking over pure aerial power. Wide fairways invite aggressive play off the tee, but the shaggy native fescue and waste bunkers punish anything too wayward.
Streamsong sits roughly 90 minutes from both Tampa and Orlando, genuinely removed from the surrounding world — which is very much the point.
